MATERIAL TRANSPARENCY: The Evolution of an Industry

Material transparency in the chemical industry is a hot topic as chemical disclosure lists are becoming more prominent in the building industry. This course provides a general overview on the topic of red lists, health product declarations, and environmental product declarations. It reviews some updated information about what industry groups and environmental agencies are discussing in Washington and discusses how transparency affects the construction industry. We will open the discussion for a science-based analysis of transparency and how it affects the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions while increasing energy efficiency and providing safety and durability in the built environment.

MATERIAL TRANSPARENCY: The Evolution of an Industry

Your Course Description:

How can you tell the environmental impact of a material if you don't know what it's made of? Designers, manufacturers and chemists are shifting to an era of transparency, partially induced by health and environmental concerns. Still, even once the material make-up is known, there may only be limited knowledge of its impact. How can we be sure a product is safe for those who extract, manufacture, install, maintain or use a product? Two positions currently dominate the conversation; one is founded on the precautionary principal, while the other is based on an assessment of risk and exposure to a material.

Our panelists will describe the evolution of transparency in materials, explain how the concept is being applied within the industry and discuss anticipated future trends. Case studies will be presented to illustrate how material transparency is impacting actual projects during the design, material specification and construction phases.

You will learn about:

  • the history of developing a design industry standard(s) for material transparency using the timeline presented by the panel.
  • the differences between the two concepts of material transparency, the precautionary principal versus risk and exposure assessment.
  • how material transparency has impacted two third-party green building rating systems, LEED® and Living Building Challenge.
  • how material transparency impacts the design process.
